Rio's 2016 Olympic bid gets a big bucks backer

CHICAGO have got Obama, Madrid have got Samaranch, now Rio's 2016 Olympic campaign have got their own big backer - and he comes with an even bigger cheque book.

MONEY TALKS: Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista is pledging big money to Rio's 2016 Olympic bid
He might not have the charisma or raw star power of the new Mr President or the connections and wheeler dealing savvy of the former IOC President but he's got cash - and lots of it.
Billionaire Brazilian entrepreneur Eike Batista this week pledged $4.5 million to support the bid.
The question must be - with just 175 days to go until the IOC make their decision in Copenhagen, what exactly he is going to spend it on?
"I was taught the idea that giving is better than receiving," he said.
"If you can bring the Olympics to Rio will be an unparalleled experience. Rio, which is already marvelous, will be invincible."
Sergio Cabral, the state governor of Rio de Janeiro, is clearly a man who believes in running against the odds.
Rio is currently 4/1 with bookmakers to upset short-priced favourite Chicago. Toyko are the other city in the running.
"It will be a good investment for Eike," he said.
