Alcott was hopeful of a top-ten place following her 11th in this week's super combined but she struggled on a demanding and technical course.
And her cause wasn't helped by an early start bib, which meant she was sent off in gloomy conditions.
"It is a really fast course and it was really dark up there when I went and I made a judgment error," she said, after finishing 20th.
"I lost a ridiculous amount of speed - but that is what happens when you ski at night-time.
"It was a really tough race and it is hard not to be bitter because you get what you are drawn and you have to deal with it.
"But it could have been very different because I'm in good form."
American Lindsey Vonn was forced to settle for bronze, despite starting red-hot favourite to add to her downhill title.
The American put down a searing run but Austria's Andrea Fischbacher eased the pressure on her under-fire team to claim gold while Slovenia's Tina Maze took silver.

Gloomy Conditions
Its a bit strange that Julia Mancuso started one place in front of Chemmy and was nearly two seconds faster. Was there a temporary flash of light, did she have special glasses
