KATHRIN Zettel won the World Cup women's giant slalom in Semmering - to the delight of a her home fans.

Austria's Zettel won the same event in 2006 and she mastered a technical course to finish ahead of Italy's Manuela Moelgg and Swiss youngster Lara Gut.

World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn maintained her position at the top of the overall standings with an eighth place finish - just under two seconds slower than Zettel.

Zettel was second after the first run but made up the difference on Moelgg with an aggressive second run.

"It is great to win twice at home," she said.

"I was happy with my first leg run. I prefer to be the hunter rather than the hunted. On the second run I knew that Lara had skiied really well.

"But I was really focused and I had this is a good omen for tomorrow's slalom."
