Three-time Olympian Godfrey ignited Team GB’s archery hopes as he thrashed Mexican Juan Rene Serrano 7-1, two days after he was part of the British team whose Games campaign ended with defeat to Ukraine.

The 36-year-old, who narrowly missed out on an individual medal in Athens, was pleased to reach the last 16 and credited the home crowd for their help.

"I feel good, it was absolutely fantastic. I came out here to do a job; I wanted to shoot at the level I know I can, and I shot them as well as I can,” said Godfrey.

"At the end of the day this is a big show. This is the best arena I have ever shot in. The crowd are absolutely fantastic. I wanted to take it all in. It helps me to shoot my best."

The 2011 world mixed team bronze medallist defeated Bangladeshi Emdadul Haque Milon in his opening tie before disposing of Serrano, and will return to action on Thursday as he chases Olympic success on home soil.
