Tyson Gay beats Nesta Carter in 9.92 seconds in Zagreb
TYSON Gay romped to victory in Zagreb, clocking 9.92 seconds to leave Jamaica's Nesta Carter trailing in his wake.
The American, who shares the fastest 100m time in the world this year of 9.78 with Carter, cruised home to take the line honours, but the race did not live up to Gay's billing of ‘the fastest this year'.
Gay clocked 9.78 in Crystal Palace last month, shortly after inflicting Usain Bolt's first major defeat for two years in Stockholm, while Carter followed suit in Rieti, Italy last Sunday,
Carter has shot to prominence late in the season and closely followed Gay across the line in the final Diamond League meet of the season in Brussels last week as the duo clocked 9.79 and 9.85 respectively.
As a result, and with both Bolt and Asafa Powell on the sidelines, this was billed as the clash of the 2010 titans and it was Gay who notched up the most comfortable of victories.
Meanwhile, world and European high jump champion Blanka Vlasic enjoyed her homecoming, taking victory by clearing 2.02, for the third time this season.
Vlasic's season's best currently stands at 2.03m, down on the 2.05m set by the USA's Chaunte Howard-Lowe in Des Moines in June.
But she took victory on home soil by a full nine centimetres ahead of Russia's Svetlana Shkolina.
