Jenny Meadows has Dame Kelly's record in her sights
MIDDLE distance runner Jenny Meadows admitted she has one eye breaking double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes' 800m national record this indoor season.
The 27-year-old reached the final of the World Indoor Championships in Valencia last year with a personal best time of 1:59.73 seconds - half a second shy of Holmes British record.
And with March's European Indoor Championships on the horizon and a host of indoor events in the UK - Meadows is quietly confident she can overthrow her mentor.
"A big goal for me this winter is to try and break Kelly's British indoor record," said Meadows.
"I came close last year but with the Euro's coming up it isn't a million miles away. I would love to medal there and that would mark a great start to 2009.
"I want to become a regular finalist this year - I have an added taste for success now and I can't not think about the London 2012 Games in four years time and being in the 800m final on home turf."
Meadows has endured a turbulent past 12 months combining the death of her father Keith in June with a semi-final berth at the Olympics two months later.
And the Wigan Harrier has vowed not to get too ahead of herself as she plots a stress-free year.
"I was definitely satisfied with 2008 but maybe I was hoping for a little more," she added. "But I will learn from the experiences I have had and I will become stronger.
