The 35-year-old Kenyan born athlete clocked 13:11.50 minutes, edging out Ethopian duo Dejen Gebremeskel and Bekana Daba to take victory over 5000m.

Lagat has been in impressive form already this season and won the Millrose Games Wanamaker mile for a record eighth time last month.

Meanwhile, in Stuttgart, Laverne Jones-Ferrette dipped below seven seconds over 60m at the Sparkassen Cup, becoming the first woman to do so in 11 years.

Jones-Ferrette, who hails from the US Virgin Islands, is no household name but she burst onto the scene last weekend clocking 7.09 seconds in Karlsruhe.

Three days later she equalled that mark in Dusseldorf and in Stuttgart she clocked 6.97 seconds to set the sixth-fastest time in history.

Meanwhile, Ethopia's Mesert Defar clocked 8:24.46 en route to 3000m victory, setting the third-fastest time in history, but still nearly three seconds short of the world record she set three years ago.

In the men's 3000m, Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge edged out Ethopian rival Tariku Bekele in a thrilling finish, crossing the line in 7:32.99.

In the 60m hurdles, Olympic champion Dayron Robles of Cuba secured victory in 7.48, just 0.01 ahead of the USA's David Oliver.

There was not such good news for the British athletes in Stuttgart as Craig Pickering and Helen Clitheroe both finished fourth in the 60m and 1500m respectively, while Sarah Claxton bowed out in the 60m hurdles heats.
