Bekele's 10,000 victory equals record of Gebrselassie
From Tom Oldfield, Sportsbeat, in Berlin
TWO-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele equalled compatriot Haile Gebrselassie's illustrious record with his fourth World Championships gold in the men's 10,000m final in Berlin.
And Ethiopian Bekele smashed the championships record for good measure, crossing the line in 26 minutes 46.31 seconds.
Eritrean Zersenay Tadese led most of the way but had to settle for silver, posting a time of 26.50.12, while Moses Ndiema Masai completed the podium
But it was Bekele who once again dominated the headlines - adding to the titles he won in Paris, Helsinki and Osaka.
"It was great to win for the fourth time in the World Championships and I'm so happy with my run," he said.
"I planned all along to stay back until the last lap and then kick on once I got there.
"I may still do the 5,000m but I will make a decision on that tomorrow."
And Tadese admitted he was content with his evening's work, despite failing to top the podium.
"I am very, very happy, though it was tough because I led for many laps," he explained.
"Winning a silver medal was my best performance in a World Championships."
Spain's Marta Dominguez also had a night to remember as she produced an inspired late burst to win the women's 3,000m steeplechase.
The 35-year-old only joined the leaders with three laps remaining but defied the odds to pass Russian Yuliya Zarudneva and clinch victory in 9.07.32.
Zarudneva collected silver while Milcah Cheywa claimed bronze as Olympic champion, Russia's Gulnara Galkina, so impressive in the heats, fell away and finished fourth.
In the women's triple jump, Cuba bagged gold and silver, with Yargenis Savigne's jump of 14.95m proving enough to see off the challenge of compatriot Mabel Gay.
Gay's best effort of 14.61m saw her squeeze into second place ahead of Russian Anna Pyatykh.
And Slovenian Primoz Kozmus stole the show in the men's hammer as he added a World Championship gold to his victory in Beijing last year with a throw of 80.84m.
Kozmus did enough to outgun Poland's Szymon Ziolkowski and Russian Aleksey Zagornyi of Russia, who grabbed silver and bronze respectively.
"My throwing was very good," he said.
"I am happy that my body did not disappointed me when it really mattered."
