Wariner, the two-time 400m world champion, split with coach Clyde Hart - Michael Johnson's former mentor - in January 2008.

And he then saw compatriot LaShawn Merritt, with whom he will link up for the 4x400m relay later in the week, pip him to gold in Beijing last summer.

But the pair were reunited in May 2009, with Hart vowing to return his charge to top form.

And Wariner coasted through the first round in Berlin before booking his place in the final with a time of 44.69 seconds.

Now he must win this evening's mouth-watering duel with Merritt, who ran 44.37 secs in the semi-final and has looked equally impressive this week.

"Last season is last season as far as I'm concerned," said Wariner.

"I'm not worried about that anymore. I made my decision for my own reasons and this year I'm back with my coach - and the season has been going great.

"We have put our differences aside and I'm excited about competing in the final. I'm ready to defend my title.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's been a bit of a slow season for me but I've been preparing all year for this to see where I'm up to and make my mark."
