Tyson Gay targets the 9.5 second mark ahead of British Grand Prix
TYSON Gay is recovering from losing his world 100m and 200m crowns by setting his sights firmly on the 9.5 second mark - as long as Usain Bolt doesn't get there first.

I'LL BE BACK: Tyson Gay insists he will be back to full fitness to renew his rivalry with Usain Bolt next season
The American came out second best at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August, claiming silver behind Bolt in the 100m before having to watch from the sidelines as the flying Jamaican smashed the world record in the 200m a few days later.
And Gay was denied the chance for revenge in the relay when, for the second consecutive major championships, the Americans fluffed up their heat and were disqualified for an illegal handover between Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton.
But the American is a tough cookie to break down and with trademark confidence Gay insists he is focusing on the positives from Berlin, where he set a new American record of 9.71 secs in the 100m final, despite a niggling groin injury which ruled him out of defending his 200m title.
"I was happy with the medal and the performance," said Gay. "I had a little bit of pain with my groin so I still felt victorious in my own way. It made me glad I didn't quit and give up.
"But I know I can run a lot faster - I've been saying that since day one. I really believe 9.5 seconds is possible. I know it sounds strange for a guy who's best is 9.7 to say that but I honestly believe it - it's been one of my goals since I started running.
"Although I told my coach Jon Drummond I've stopped writing goals down because Usain keeps breaking them before I do! But the bottom line is, if I stay healthy and train hard, I believe I can get myself to that level.
"The time Usain ran was amazing and unfortunately it wasn't me on that day but it's just about getting healthy again."
Gay has been plagued with injuries since scooping triple gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Osaka two years ago.
A hamstring strain at the Olympic trials in 2008 meant the 27-year old missed out on the 200m in Beijing and hampered the American's preparation so much that he failed to make the 100m final.
And a persistent groin complaint this season prevented Gay from admitting to 100 per cent fitness at any point in the year.
But the world silver medallist isn't finished yet this season - he lines up in the 100m at the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead on Monday in a high class field which also includes world 4x100m relay bronze medallists, Brits Marlon Devonish, Tyrone Edgar and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.
And as Gay prepares for one of his last events of the season, he is adamant he will take his rivalry with Bolt to new levels when he returns, fully fit, next year.
"I'm going to be back to 100 per cent next season," said Gay. "The groin problems have been a setback this year and my groin has been constantly sore.
"I would have liked to have been competing but it wasn't too difficult to watch. I knew there was a possibility I wasn't going to be able to run and I knew my body wasn't able to go through another three runs.
"But I've been doing a lot of strength work recently. I'll take six weeks off after this season and then get back to training again for next year.
"Usain knows I'm going to be around next season and it's great for the sport to have that rivalry. I didn't realise how special it was to run against someone that talented - he's keeping me in the limelight as well.
The only person I've been beaten by this season is the world record holder and I intend to keep it that way in Gateshead."
Tickets for the British Grand Prix at the Gateshead International Stadium on Monday 31st August will be available on the door.

What's John Smith's e-address ?
i think tyson gay is faking
i think tyson gay is faking his groin injury. if he is injured he is not running. he knows that his time as a world best is fast coming to a halt. so, he's just hanging around with usain in order to get money before he call it quits by next year.
you guys don't know
you guys don't know sprinting. Gay can beat Usain
if he improves his drive phase. He has the worst transition in the business. Bolts top end is slower than Donovan Baileys.
The best years for sprinters
The best years for sprinters is 26-32. Not only am I a fan i'm a stat man and a coach. Plus Jon Drummond was trained by Thee Best coach John Smith of HSI so of course Tyson was gonna have a big improvement. And Usain had to deal with growth spurt from 6-3 to 6-5 which answered for his hamstring issues 2 years ago. All the energy goes toward the spurt instead of fitness. I learned that in the IAAF coaches manual. The next dangerous guy would be WOPAMO OSAISAI if he would quit thinking he's a football player.
gay will never beat bolt if he is healthy....
I dont think gay can evere beat a healthy usain bolt,Bolt is a special tallent and its gonna take someone just as special to beat him and that person is not yet running.IT wont be gay because i think gay top out at 9.7 he havent even run bolt ilympic record of 9.69 yet and talking about he gonna run 9.50 wont hapennd.
He ran 9.71 this year with a
He ran 9.71 this year with a sore groin so obviously he can go even faster. Usain is really making the rest of the top sprinters raise their game up. I don't know if he'll ever get to 9.5..something. But I like his mindset. It's all about winning and the fact that he believes he can run that fast is going to bring the best out of him.
I think Tyson will probably run 9.65 as his fastest race before he'll retire.
I think he is the only one
I think he is the only one to really challenge Bolt
Maybe he will run in the
Maybe he will run in the thin air in Mexico with a +1.9 wind and get that 9.5 he is talking about.
Besides that, the only way this almost 28 year old man will get that time is if he lines up 3 metres ahead of Bolt to start his race.
Track
Right now the show belongs to Bolt. However, there will certainly be more great U.S. sprinters to challenge the world record. It doesn't matter if its Tyson or not, American youth are training hard to remove that 9:58. I'm certain Jamaica can respond likewise, only time will tell who will win the most World and Olympic 100/200 titles. Not certain but I think the U.S. is still ahead. GO RED WHITE AND BLUE!!
Please tyson, forget about
Please tyson, forget about it. Instead of trying to run faster, you need to explain how you went from a average 100m runner in college,..barely running with wallace spearman to a world class sprinter in just a few years later..you people check it out..he went from 10.1 something to 9.84 a year later.I think it was 2005 to 2006 or 2006 to 2007. one of the two check out his time progression from college to pro...and then you tell me something isn't wrong..I think you were on that shit also...but we can't prove it...
Competition is good for the sport
I see Gay as the only athlete at the moment who can give Bolt competition. If there is no competition the sport will get boring. Asafa is not consistent so I can't count on him, he's a big joker and a loser. He had the opportunity but could not deliver when its most important.
Gay and 9.5sec
I don't believe Gay say the piece by Michael Johnson, when he said, that Gay is finished at 27 going 28. He also said, that Bolt is only ,23, too young to be challenged. And, that Bolt will be unbeatable for the next 10 years. In the world championship, Bolt was 0.13 secs. ahead of Gay which translates to approximately, 2 to 3 meters ahead, significant distance in the 100M. How does an athlete at 27 going 28 improved from 9.7 to 9.5, while he gets older. However, the same individual ran 9.7+ for at least three years. How will he be improving, while, he will be slowing down next year and beyond? Mr. Gay needs to read the blogs or consult with Michael, we understand that he has to hype-self to maintain the limelight with Bolt, to maintain contract to get paid. That's good and well, but we beleive, sooner or later somebody is going to be hurt badly, probably block-out trying to follow Bolt.
Gay and 9.5 seconds
I'm curious to see how a mature man at 27 going 28 getting the best coaching and nutrition around improve his time from 9.71 to 9.50. Anything is possible but I would have to see this improvement by Gay before I will believe. How much more stronger can Gay get? I told my friends that no way he was going to run the 200m after running the 100m. Whatever the excuse, I never see Gay running his lifetime best and recover in time to run the 200m. Outside of injuries, I don't see Gay being the number one US sprinter in the next Olympics. He will be 30 at that time, ususally at that age the body don't recover easily doing the rounds.
