The English pair, who won the Singapore Open last June, lost to seventh seeds Zhendong Guo and Chen Xu in straight sets 21-14, 21-11

But former European champion Clark came through his mixed doubles match with new partner Heather Olver against Sheng Mu Lee and Yu Chin Chien 21-18, 22-20.

Overall it was a disappointing day for the English players with Jenny Wallwork and Gabrielle White losing out in the women's doubles to sixth seeds Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna 21-23, 21-9, 21-8.

While top seeds from China Jing Du and Yu Yang looked impressive as they knocked out Russia's Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova 21-8, 21-12.

In the men's singles England's number two Andrew Smith saw his tournament end as he lost at the hands of Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat 21-18, 21-14.

Number one seed Chong Wei Lee from Malaysia had no such trouble as he overcame Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kunncoro 21-11, 21-17.

Meanwhile, China's top seed in the women's singles Yihan Wang came through safely against Japan's Yu Hirayama in straight sets.
