COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Cann trumps Egelstaff for bronze

ENGLAND'S Liz Cann beat Scotland's Susan Egelstaff to win the singles bronze medal and avenge defeat from the 2006 Commonwealth Games at the same stage.
Egelstaff took bronze from Cann in Melbourne, but Jersey-born Cann proved too strong for the Scot today with victory in straight sets, 21-18, 21-16.
Trailing 13-6 in the opening game, Cann seemed to find another gear as she fought back to take the first game comprehensively then stormed to victory in the second set to clinch the medal.
"I played well. I was in this situation four years back [at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games] when I was defeated by Egelstaff, so I feel amazing winning today," said Cann.
"It has been a long tournament. We have been playing for so long. There was constant pressure whether I would be able to do it but I played some of the best matches of my life here.
"I've improved as the tournament's gone on. It's been such a long tournament and I kept thinking, ‘Am I going to get a medal?', so I'm just so happy."
In the women's doubles there was disappointment for England's Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White who threw away a 1-0 lead to lose out on the bronze.
The match with Australia's Kate Wilson-Smith and He Tian Tang had started well for the English pair, who took the opening set 23-21 but they were not helped when White inadvertently suffered an injury when Wallwork accidently hit her hand with her racquet.
However, they were well beaten in the second set 21-12 and the third seeds let slip a 7-3 lead in the deciding set to end their doubles campaign empty-handed.
"We're devastated," said Wallwork. "Unfortunately we couldn't play as well as we could have done, and we couldn't play to our best. We were tired and slow.
"I accidently hit Gabby's hand and after that it affected the match, so we found it hard to attack."
White added: "I am gutted we couldn't bring home a medal."
"We didn't play well today, I am an emotional wreck."
