The world number 24 had game point at 20-19 in the opener but lost the next three points to give himself a mountain to climb.

But Ouseph raced through the second set, losing just nine points along the way, before claiming a tight decider to prevail 20-22, 21-9, 21-16.

The 22-year old will have his work cut out to reach the quarter finals with world number four and defending champion, Peter Gade of Denmark, is his opponent on Thursday.

While England number two Andrew Smith slipped to a 21-4, 21-14 defeat to world number one Chong Wei Lee, Carl Baxter followed Ouseph into the last 16 with a straight games win.

The world number 39 was up against a higher ranked player in the form of Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in Seoul, but after strolling through the first game, the 24-year old came through a rollercoaster second game to win 21-8, 21-17.

Fourth seed and world number eight, China's Bao Chunlai awaits Baxter on Thursday.

The English had less success in the doubles as all three pairs tripped up at the first hurdle in Korea.

Gabby White and Jenny Wallwork lost 21-14, 15-21, 21-11 to Korea's Choi Hye In and Lee So Hee in the women's doubles while White and Chris Adcock also fell in three sets in the mixed, losing 12-21, 21-15, 21-18 to Japan's Naoki Kawamae and Shuzuka Matsuo.

Finally, Adcock and Robert Blair lost a tight game 22-20, 21-16 to China's Chai Biao and Zhang Nan.
