The three-time national champion, who moved into the world's top 20 with a victory in the US Open this summer, was brushed aside 21-9, 21-9 by world number one Lee Chong Wei.

The Malaysian, who is seeking a first world title after winning the All England crown earlier this year, looks a strong favourite for gold - and could face Ouseph again in October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

"I tried everything I could but he was too good," admitted Ouseph, after a match lasting just 22 minutes

"But it's been a good week. I scrapped through the first round (against Dutchman Eric Pang) in my first World Championships and then I beat Jan Jorgensen (Denmark) yesterday for the first time.

"But Lee was way too good for me. Whether he can go on and win the title, I don't know as there's still Lin Dan to contend with."

However, Ouseph still heads to Delhi in an upbeat mood - rising more places on the world rankings to a career high 14.

Elsewhere, European mixed doubles bronze medallists Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork went out in three games against reigning world champions Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl of Denmark 20-22 21-12 21-18 in 67 minutes.

Robertson and Anthony Clark then suffered a severe beating by 2006 and 2009 Chinese world champions Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng, losing 21-6 21-9 in just 25 minutes.
