Sharks edge battle of the BBL table-toppers

SHEFFIELD Sharks stunned hosts and nearest rivals Newcastle Eagles to extend their lead at the top of the BBL Championships.

Following a victory over Cheshire Jets 24 hours earlier, Atiba Lyons team were brimming with confidence ahead of a clash between the two hottest title contenders.

They dominated the early exchanges but squandered an 18-point lead in the second quarter and then had to overturn a six-point deficit to defeat the reigning champions.

Mike Cook led the scoring with a 36-point contribution while Tafari Toney and Ryan Patton again provided the support.

In British Basketball League Cup action, Leicester Riders defeated visitors Worcester Wolves 96-87 while Milton Keynes Lions were slender 101-95 winners over hosts Plymouth Raiders.
