The former world champion and two-time overall World Cup winner was well placed in fifth, after the first run at the 2006 Olympic venue.
But he suffered a disaster in the second run, falling out of the start grooves to slip to 16th, one place ahead of British team-mate Adam Pengilly, who also disappointed.
Canada's Jon Montgomery claimed victory by just under half a second with early World Cup leader, Latvia's Martin Dukurs, in second.
Montgomery's team-mate Jeff Pain claimed bronze while Michael Douglas made it three Canadians in the top four.
Germany's Sandro Stielicke, just 31 points behind Dukurs in the overall standings, completed the top five.
