Minichiello takes overall bronze

NICOLA Minichiello has claimed overall bobsleigh World Cup bronze, having finished sixth in the final race of the season in Park City.

The 30-year-old, ably assisted by former long jumper Gillian Cooke, has been in consistent form all season, and had claimed three bronze medals in just two days, earlier in the year.

It was Germany's Cathleen Martini who claimed victory in Utah and compatriot Sandra Kiriasis who secured her seventh consecutive overall World Cup title.

Kirasis finished the season with three victories and 1679 points. She moved up three places after the first heat to finish third. 

Martini and Janine Tischer won the race with a combined time of 1:38.66 minutes after leading the field in both heats, recording runs of 49.28 and 49.38 seconds.

Martini finished the World Cup season ranked second with 1,599 points.

Canadians Kaillie Humphries and Shelly-Ann Brown claimed silver after crossing the finish line in 49.30 and 49.54 secs for a total time of 1:38.84m.

Russia's Aleksandr Zubkov won the two-man World Cup final race while Beat Hefti of Switzerland captured the overall two-man title.    

Zubkov recorded runs of 48.26 and 48.25 secs for a 1:36.51m total that have him a 0.17 secs margin over Thomas Florschuetz of Germany, who posted a pair of 48.44 times.

The bronze went to Hefti and his brakeman Thomas Lamparter, who had runs of 48.30 and 48.39 for a 1:36.69m.

Britain's Lee Johnston finished the two-man competition in 20th overall, having come 25th in Park City with partner Matthew Douglas.
