Gamal Yafai follows brother onto the podium at Euros
GAMAL Yafai guaranteed himself a medal at the European Championships, just 24 hours after older brother Khalid had done the same as Britain's boxers continue to excel in Moscow.
BROTHERS IN ARMS: Khalid (l) and Gamal Yafai have both guaranteed themselves at least a bronze medal at the European Championships in Moscow (ABAE)
Yafai junior, 18, and Tom Stalker were both victorious in their quarter-final bouts. They ensured a safe passage to the semis and guaranteed themselves bronze medals.
That means Britain's boxers, who are fighting in their individual home nation colours in Russia, have guaranteed at least five medals with Yafai senior, Iain Weaver and Wales' Andrew Selby also through to their respective semis.
Yafai junior was in imperious form in the Russian capital and raced into a 6-0 lead in the second round with a fantastic display of counter-punching against John Nevin of Ireland, eventually sealing a 7-1 win.
Stalker meanwhile, who eliminated Italy's reigning world champion Domenico Valentino on his way to the quarter-finals, squeezed into the last four with a countback victory over Artjoms Ramlavs of Latvia, after the scores were locked at 2-2 after three rounds.
And Selby completed a fine day for Britain's finest, with a composed final-round performance to secure a 4-2 win over Furkan Memis of Turkey in the 54kg category.
But there was not such good news for Tommy Stubbs, who was downed 8-1 by Ireland's Patrick Barnes with an excellent and controlled display.
