GREAT Britain's performance director Kevin Hickey has resigned from his post with immediate effect citing personal reasons.

The decision comes just eight months into a deal to lead Britain's boxers to the London Olympics following their most successful haul - one gold and two bronzes - in 56 years in Beijing.

Hickey's departure comes less than a week after Great Britain failed to win a medal at the World Championships in Milan.

But the 68-year-old believes the excessive workload of the role is impacting on the his family life.

Hickey was appointed under controversial circumstances, with Terry Edwards released from his role as head coach before overseeing the restructuring of Ghana's amateur boxing programma.

Hickey previously coached the national team in five Olympics between 1972 and 1988 before returning to the setup in January.
