McDonnell, who used to coach heavyweight star Danny Williams, will tutor the gold medal winner ahead of his first professional fight on February 28.
DeGale, fellow Olympian Billy Joe Saunders and 2007 world amateur champion Frankie Gavin, will take to the ring on the undercard of Matt Skelton's Commonwealth heavyweight title fight.
And McDonnell believes DeGale's professional bow is step one on the path towards world glory.
"I believe James will become the first gold medallist to become a world champion," said McDonnell.
"It will take time and it may not be the smoothest ride at first because making the transition will be difficult.
"But the kid is something very special and I believe he will get there."
McDonnell trained Williams for his famous victory over Mike Tyson in 2004 and DeGale, who was also linked with trainer Jimmy Tibbs, insists Williams was always his No.1 choice.
"I knew Jim from 2006 when I boxed England v America - he was always on my mind," added the 22-year-old DeGale.
"I spoke to both of them but I liked the vibe and the way Jim McDonnell trained so I went for him."
