Cawthorn, who won silver in yesterday's K1 500m, upgraded that with a confident win in the 1000m, clocking 3.55.05.

"It was her race from the moment that she woke up," said coach Trevor Hunter.

"She is mentally tough, this girl has steel girders in her brain when it comes to producing the big race on the big day."

Lani Belcher and Lucy Wainwright won bronze in the K2 while Jess Walker, Louisa Sawyers, Hayleigh Mason and Wainwright claimed a creditable fifth in the K4.

"We knew that we had chances of a good breakthrough in the women's classes and we have proved that," said John Anderson, performance director at the British Canoe Union.

"With Germany and Poland having two entries per class and only the Hungarians and Spanish teams missing, this has been a real headline regatta and the signs are good for the European and World Championships later this season."
