DAVID Florence’s hopes of a London 2012 medal were shattered after he failed to make the final of the C1 canoe slalom at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.
WORLD NO.1 OUT: David Florence fails to make finals and misses out on Olympic gold
The world No.1 and silver medallist from Beijing 2008 posted a time of 106.16 seconds in the semi-finals, which was only good enough for tenth with the top eight progressing to the final.
Florence, who also partners Richard Hounslow in the C2 event, hit gate 18 to incur two penalty seconds and miss out on the medal showdown later this afternoon.
“Obviously I am very very disappointed,” said the 29-year-old. “It didn’t really go my way and I’m not quite sure what happened but it wasn’t good enough today.
“Sometimes that’s just the way of the sport.
“It’s hard to say right now exactly what went wrong. We do a lot of races every year and this year I’ve sort of finished first or second and ninth 25th and here obviously it was not good enough.
“So yeah it’s up and down and this was the race I wanted to perform at obviously and I haven’t which is a huge, huge disappointment.
“I feel sorry for everybody who has supported me in the last four years but I gave it my all today and I obviously didn’t set out to put out a bad run.
“It just wasn’t really fast enough the whole way down to be honest.
“I’ll just have to refocus for the C2 and really try to pick things up for that.”
