With world champion Tom Daley absent, former Olympic silver medallist Waterfield recovered from a shaky first dive to post a series of attention-grabbing scores.
"I got the score needed for qualification to the Commonwealth Games," said Waterfield, after posting a score of 472.50
"This will be my third Commonwealths and hopefully I can get another gold medal.
"I did really well in my prelim but I had a shaky start to the final. I was trying to make sure I had enough points to qualify.
"It would have been good if Tom had been here. He would have pushed me on further."
City of Leeds diver Rebecca Gallantree took the three metre springboard title - after selecting a series of dives with difficult tariffs in the final.
Gallantree recently finished in fourth place in the ten metre synchro at the FINA World Cup but missed the same event at the nationals after partner Stacie Powell withdrew through injury.
"I feel good to have won," said Gallantree, after scoring 294.25.
"But some dives were not as good as I wanted and I know I can do better.
"Preparation for this competition has been tricky because we only recently returned from China so I am happy to win that event."
