BRITISH Show Jumping have named former GB rider Rob Hoekstra as their new World Class Performance Manager ahead of the 2010 season.

The Dutch-born coach represented Great Britain at 5* level in the 1980s and 1990s and takes over from previous incumbent Derek Ricketts who was fired following Great Britain's relegation from the Meydan FEI Nations Cup series last year.

Having had their appeal against relegation dismissed by an FEI Tribunal in January, British Show Jumping has now taken its argument to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

But whether Britain will be competing in the Nations Cup or second-tier Promotional League, Hoekstra insists the long term goal of the 2012 Olympics is his primary target.

"I am delighted to be appointed as the Show Jumping Performance Manager," said Hoekstra.

"I am looking forward to what will certainly be a challenge but also presents a huge opportunity.

"My first task is to meet with all the riders and ensure they are focused on developing plans through to 2012.

"Over the next couple of months we will build those plans, working with key stakeholders across the sport in Britain."

Having failed to medal at the Beijing Olympics, Great Britain's show jumpers failed to measure up to the eventers who captured individual and team bronze.

But Performance Development Committee chairman Clare Whitaker insists Hoekstra's appointment is a vital step on the road to podium-places in London 2012.

"Rob's appointment as show jumping performance manager is a fresh start for everyone," said Whitaker.

"He will be the driving force to take us to medal success at the 2012 Olympic Games.

"I believe his appointment is a positive step forward for the spot and I hope that everyone will put together under his leadership to achieve success for Britain on the world stage."
