GREAT Britain's fencers Alex Tofalides and Amy Radford were left to ponder on what might have been after both fell narrowly short of the medal mix-up at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

Tofalides and Radford, competing in the foil and the epee events, finished seventh and eighth respectively in the Lion City as both crashed out at the quarter-final stage.

In the foil competition, Tofalides collected two victories in the pool competition and notched up an impressive 15-9 win over Egypt's Mostafa Mahmoud to reach the last eight.

But it was there the 17-year-old came a cropper, going down 15-12 in a closely-fought match with the USA's Alexander Massialas, who went on to take silver as gold went to Italy's Edoardo Luperi.

Radford, meanwhile, made her way through the pool section with two wins before clinching her quarter final berth with a 15-13 win over Switzerland's Pauline Brunner.

However that was when Radford's luck ran out as she came up against Chinese number one seed Sheng Lin - who eventually triumphed 15-5 before going on to claim gold.

“Overall the tournament had ups and downs for me because I was happy with the way I fenced but there were things I could have done better,” said Radford.

“However, I came to finish in the top eight and I did that so I am happy. The results in the pool stage were a bit frustrating because there was a game against the South African girl that I definitely should have won but I underestimated her.

“That meant that I had a tough draw for the knock-out stages and so that was definitely an error and I will learn from that."
