CHRYSTALL Nicoll reached new heights to pick up a shock bronze medal in the World Cup in Klagenfurt, Austria.

The 23-year-old notched up three victories to send her into the last four and finish third overall after losing out to eventual winner Irene Vecchi.

The world number eight defeated Nicoll 15-8 on her way to the gold medal but the British fencer was happy just to reach a World Cup podium for the first time.

"I'm really pleased with my performance and the confidence it has given me," said Nicoll.

"I'm looking forward to building on this success in the remainder of the season and on to the 2012 Olympic Games."

Compatriot Jo Hutchinson reached the quarter-final stage before being overcome by Italian Alessandra Lucchino.
