JOHNNY Weir has become the latest big-name competitor to withdraw from the World Figure Skating Championships, but the American insists it does not spell the end of his career.

The 25-year-old, who finished sixth at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver last month, has been replaced in the American team by Adam Rippon, winner of the last two junior world titles.

"While I understand the importance of competition, I feel that a short break at this time would be personally beneficial to me. I can assure everyone that I will be re-energised after I've had time to rework my technique.

"I want to be a better competitor and win medals for my country and I hope everyone can respect my decision to take this time off.

"But I will continue to work hard and I hope my work for next season will be the most exciting of my career."

Olympic men's champion Evan Lysacek of the USA has already confirmed he will not defend his world title in Turin later this month while Russian ice dancers Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, bronze medallists in Vancouver, will also be absent.

While the eyes of most dance

While the eyes of most dance fans will be fixed on the battle between Virtue & Moir and Davis & White in Québec City, another dance battle will be staged this weekend, halfway around the world. In Zagreb, Croatia, the 44th annual Golden Spin competition will host 17 teams, primarily from European nations.

Although they finally fought their way back to the Grand Prix circuit, Germany’s Nelli Zhiganshina & Alexander Gazsi continue to keep themselves busy with senior internationals. The tactic worked well for them last season, leading to a breakthrough performance at the World Championships. This year, their status in the dance world has been solidified by a silver medal at Nebelhorn Trophy, and a gold medal at Ondrej Nepela, in addition to two fourth-place finishes on the Grand Prix. Although they have not yet reached the heights of last season’s scores, they have the advantage of momentum and are the favorites to lead the pack in Zagreb.

Meant to type USFSA.

Oh yes, young Evan is competing agaist elders and others who don't have the athletic background of skaters.
This is what helped Kristi Yamaguchi and Apollo Ohno to easily win the "Dancing With the Stars" championship.

In January, Jeremy Abbott

In January, Jeremy Abbott and Ryan Bradley finished 1-2 at the USFA National Championships.

Ryan didn't go to Vancouver. Jeremy Abbott did, as the national champion; and promptly self-destructed!

Evan has his gold medal. Lucky guy!

The World copetition is

The World copetition is short of competitors who would bring in TV viewers. Forgive the unfortunate analogy, but Johnny Weir is to figure skating as Tiger Woods is to the PGA. WIthout him, no major TV revenues.

Americans are too afraid of

Americans are too afraid of challenge ;-( (i.e. Plushenko's quads). Evan knows that he got gold in Vancouver bec. it was in North America. In Europe his 'a** dancing' does not stand a chance!!!

ass dancing? really?

ass dancing? really?

also

Evan is starting up in dancing with the stars. He has no time for competitive figure skating any more right now. ;)

um...

Johnny can do quads too. He's not afraid of competition with Plushenko. In fact, Weir and Plushenko are buddies. Like he said, he wants to rework his technique.
Though I am sad, I was wanting to see Johnny perform again. But it is rather soon...it's hardly a month after the olympics, which seems crazy to me. I'm just happy he's not quitting. :>

Um no, Evan won because he

Um no, Evan won because he understood COP while whiny ass Plushenko got beat by his own game...Go whine with the rest of Russia, complete and utter denial..
