Winter Olympic Vancouver 2010EVAN Lysacek has insisted he was a worthy winner of the Olympic men's figure skating title while half a world away Russia is in uproar.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin has labelled silver medallist, Evgeni Plushenko, the true champion while the skater's wife has angrily called for an immediate investigation.

The Russian media in Vancouver is equally furious, slamming the decision as ‘a disgrace'.

Plushenko was looking to become the first man in 58 years to defend his Olympic title and was a short-priced favourite to achieve it.

He later claimed he believed he deserved the gold, questioning the scoring system and Lysacek's cautious routine.

"I guess I was a little disappointed that someone who was my role model would take a hit at me at one of the most special moments of my life," said Lysacek.

"Losing is a tough pill to swallow and maybe he said things at the heat of the moment that he didn't mean and maybe now regrets.

"Evgeni is a great guy that I've admired for many years but for him to discredit the field is not right.

"It's the strongest men's field that there has ever been and I was honoured to be one single member of a group of outstanding athletes."

Lysacek has been criticised for a safety first routine - which he admittedly executed flawlessly - while Plushenko produced bigger jumps, which he did not always land cleanly, with a higher difficulty tariff.

The Russian - who took a sabbatical after his win in 2006 and only returned to competition this season - has been critical of skating's new judging system, claiming it does not reward his creativity or risk-taking.

In particular he believes that a routine without a difficult quad jump - which Lysacek did not attempt - is not deserving of a champion.

"I don't know why he of all people is making such a big deal of one single element," added Lysacek, the first American to claim the Olympic title since Brian Boitano in 1988.

"It's just one step in a program of a hundred of steps, which are all equally important.

"I don't know why people are hung up on the quad. If it was a jumping competition, there would be no music and no costumes and they'd give you ten seconds to do your best jump

"Our sport is not just about jumps, it's about the entire the performance, with hundreds of elements, and everything else that goes with it."

Lysacek has yet to make a decision about whether to defend his world title in Turin in next month but after initially claiming this would be his last competition, admits victory has revitalised him - although he joked it might be dangerous to travel to Plushenko's back yard in 2014.

"I can't see giving it up just yet. I'm 24 and in the best shape of my life and I want to keep competing," he said.

"I don't know about Sochi, maybe I won't get a visa!"

nice work

Nice information was shared in very good manner, Keep it up.

Lysacek is zero

Congratulations to Pluchenko for the Victory and to Lysacek for the medal around his neck. And my specials congratulations to jury for thear "achievement" almost IMPOSSIBLE of this competition.

I think Lysacek in this case

I think Lysacek in this case is worthy of the gold, even if he didn't do a quad...my point being he USED to be able to do it, and only stopped doing it due to his broken foot. i'd have loved to see Plushenko win back to back, he's one of a kind in history and deserves to be honoured in such a way. However I also think that the media is focussing too much and even mis-interpreting on Plushenko's 'negative comments'/'dissing' on Lysacek. Plushenko only said it's not worthy of a gold medal if a champion couldn't do a quad, and everyone knows that Lysacek has the technique to do it but just physically couldn't, so I don't think Plushenko's actually saying 'you don't deserve the gold' to him.

Evgeny the real winner

They gave it to Lysacek so that Plushenko couldn't win two in a row. The Americans were so pissed he came out of retirement since it was SUPPOSED to be Evan's turn. Judge Inman wrote a few days ago to current judges and told them they had to give Lysacek the edge for his "artistry." And, you can see they did, by one point. Get real, Pluschenko sat on his ass for 3 1/2 years and trains for six months and Evan beat him by ONE point with help from judges. That's how crappy Evan is. He won the world championship because Pluschenko wasn't in it. LOL The fix was in. Let's wait until Sochi. Evgeny will sit on his ass for another 3 1/2 years and win a medal then too. Also they have a new great Russian waiting in the wings for four years from now. Artem Bordulin. Watch him. He's super hot. Looks like Gwendal Peizerat.

"And, you can see they did,

"And, you can see they did, by one point."

They gave Lysacek the gold not because of artistry, but because he had higher technical marks, which is surprising since Plushenko is supposed to be the best in that field of scoring. They also earned identical component scores (artistry). I wanted Plushy to win, but he just didn't skate his free skate as well as he could have. Some of his triples were a little off on the landings and he kicked up a lot of snow.

Lysacek showed true class,

Lysacek showed true class, humility, and heart, to say nothing of advanced skill and artistry. For anyone to suggest that he did not deserve to win the gold; well, I wonder if you were watching the same skating I watched. Plushenko will no doubt regret his barb later. It was, after all, not just a jumping contest.

Best man won on the night

Lysacek skated a beautiful, nearly flawless routine, which was dynamic and captivating from start to finish. I would've loved to have seen Plushenko win, having been a fan for years, but while his performance was great, it was sloppy in places and while he did do the quad, that alone should not make up for the others areas in which he was less good. Lysacek deserved the gold on the night.

Lysacek. The worst winner

Lysacek. The worst winner ever!

Plushenko the real gold medalist

Everything is not worth one point. THe quad is the hardest think for a skater to do and he didn't do it. THe last three men have. His victory is outrageous and horrible and he should give the gold back for horribly damaging technical progress in figure skating. He is awful. Just terrible.

Lysacek is zero

Completely agree. Very well sad, thank you.
