TWO Graham Alexander penalties fired Burnley to their first away win of the season and a crucial three points in their quest for Premier League survival.

Alexander was twice successful from the spot while Martin Paterson and Wade Elliott were also on target as Burnley came from behind against Hull to clinch a 4-1 win after Kevin Kilbane's third-minute strike.

In the only other Premier League match of the day, West Ham collected an invaluable 1-0 victory over Sunderland, courtesy of Ilan Araujo Dall'Igna's goal which in turn confirmed Portsmouth's relegation.

At the KC Stadium, Hull made the perfect start in their search for a second successive home win as Kilbane headed home after just three minutes.

But the Tigers' lead did not last long and Paterson restored parity, rifling home on 35 minutes and while David Nugent missed an excellent chance to hand the Clarets the lead, that was how it stayed until half-time.

After the break both teams pressed for a second goal and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when Alexander thumped home from the penalty spot after Ibrahima Sonko had fouled Michael Duff on 64 minutes.

And the 38-year-old repeated the trick just six minutes later after Bruno Mendy was adjudged to have fouled Nugent in the box.

Hull pushed to get back into the match but could not find a way through as Burnley moved to within four points of safety as Elliott rubbed salt into the wounds with a free-kick at the death.

At Upton Park, Sunderland's recent impressive run was brought to a halt as West Ham extended the gap between them and the bottom three to four points and leapfrog Wigan on goal difference.

In a cagey affair it was Brazilian Ilan who settled matters from close range five minutes after the break to seal Portsmouth's relegation to the Championship just 24 hours before they face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
