England ENGLAND 1 GermanyGERMANY 4

WORLD CUP 2010 ENGLAND fans may burn with a sense of injustice but Germany certainly deserved their progress to the World Cup quarter-finals.

The talking point of this game will long be the goal that was but wasn't allowed, although few can argue that a flat-footed England didn't deserve their worst ever defeat in a World Cup finals.

This has been a miserable campaign for Fabio Capello's men - lacklustre against the USA, woeful against Algeria and slightly improved against Slovenia, this was always going to be a stiffer test.

Joachim Loew's side seized the lead after just 20 minutes, a long range punt from Manuel Neuer sailed over an absent John Terry and Miroslav Klose outmuscled Matthew Upson before burying a shot past David James.

It was the sort of route one football that Franz Beckenbauer had criticised England for - although judging by his reaction, the irony of that was lost on the Kaiser.

The shambles that was England's defence were soon reeling again as Klose and Thomas Mueller smartly exchanged passes before setting up Lukas Podolski to finish from an acute angle.

And still they could have scored more, had it not been for the impressive James.

England pulled one back when Matthew Upson powered home a header before the most dramatic moment of the match.

Frank Lampard unleashed a shot from distance that left Neuer flat-footed. It slapped off the underside of the bar and dropped a clear yard over the line. It bounced up against the bar again and down across the line again - but referee Jorge Larrionda was unmoved.

Germany fans will claim hubris and point to Geoff Hurst's similarly contested strike, that was allowed in the 1966 World Cup final.

But how, 44 years later, FIFA haven't learned their lesson and got serious about goalline technology remains an even greater mystery.

"Why are we speaking about this? Why don't we have goalline technology after all these years," fumed Capello.

Their sense of injustice burning England started the second half brightly with the luckless Lampard hammering a long-range free kick against the crossbar.

But as England pushed forward, Germany hit on the counterattack.

Too frequently Capello's men casually squandered possession and when Gareth Barry was robbed, Bastian Schweinsteiger played a perfect pass for Mueller to finish.

James, arguably England's best player, despite the scoreline, could have done little about it - or Germany's fourth three minutes later.

Barry again was muscled off the ball and Mesut Ozil raced into the England area before sliding a neat pass to the unmarked Mueller to finish.

It was a miserable end to a miserable campaign. The inquest starts now and the English FA may just be regretting their decision to renew Capello's multi-million pound contract before a ball was even kicked in South Africa.

England sucks!

If you see, England has the best squad. All the top EPL stars, the Squad doesn't have place for players like Walcott! Seriously, They shouldn't be playing with all good players.. Too many cooks spoil the brot!

football

England, totally pathetic, you are an embarrassment to the english fans and the country that surrported you and had faith in you.
Do you care?

It's been a pathetic

It's been a pathetic performance from start to finish. I hope now that we can see things for what they really are. These players are mugs, laughing all the way to the bank. They don't give a fuck, useless the lot of them.

FA is to blame

This has got to be the fault of the FA for making a complete mockery out of the Premier League. How many players in Chelsea, champions of England, ar actually English and first-team? Three. Arsenal? One. Liverpool? Two. English teams are spending their money on foreigners rather than building up their youth, and this is the result. Compare the average age in the English and German team. Then compare the amount of money that Engilsh and German teams spend on Youth systems in ther clubs. Then look at the scoreline. How was it possible for Arsenal to be allowed o lineup without a single English player in the team a few years ago? How could the FA be so blind not to see the consequences of not having strict rules on the number of English players a team must have in the starting 11? It should be 6 Englishmen, 2 British players(Scotland,Wales, etc), and then 3 foreign players. UEFA is now the one that is restricting clubs from buying too many foreigners with their 'home-grown players' rule for the Champions League. The FA needs to take a good, long look at itself and maybe get in new people who can hopefully prevent English football from the absolute joke of a league that it is heading towards at full speed(Led by no one else but John fucking Terry).

Ouch!

England played badly, my goodness what happened to the good ol' Rooney that can score goals with his eyes closed and with one leg tied up?? Is he supposed to score only with the assistance of Valencia or Nani??

I think that the ref screwed up big time, maybe if he allowed that goal, the result would have been different, even though Germany was stronger, faster, smarter... In other words, it was better.

England midfield is a disgrace, they don't have a #5 to save their life (Barry you dumbass, go away and never come back), the midfield was a highway for the germans to do whatever the hell they wanted. The defense was poor, amazing how Rio was missed... Upson slow, Terry slow...

I'm particularly disappointed with Rooney. We all expected a lot from him, and at no point he wasn't even close to score in any game. How could a striker who is supposed to be the top scorer in the most competitive League in the world, be so useless on a WC? Still a mystery to me, I think that if MUTD wants to sell him, they might as well offer a deal with Valencia+Rooney, otherwise he can't score worth a damn.

fucking terry how the fuck

fucking terry how the fuck did capello have the idiocy to keep that useless bastard out there on the pitch? Where the fuck was Carragher? Bastard needs to fucking resign and take the whole lot with him, especially that fucking Rooney. Bloody idiot scores bags of goals against teams like Andorra and fuck-knows-who and thinks he's Hurst. And what the hell was Barry doing? He's supposed to be breaking up play, not passing it straight to the Germans. Gerrard, what can I say? Captained Liverpool to a fucking nightmare, captained England to despair. As a Liverpool fan, I say chuck him out the window for England. Defoe,Terry,A.Cole,Barry,Lampard,Gerrard, J.Cole,Rooney,Heskey,i hope they never wear an England shirt again. One nore thing. How the heck will bringing on SWP in the 85th minute help England to score 3 goals? How will bringing on anyone so late in the game help? Why is it that managers, supposed 'tactical geniuses', can't see that they have to make changes at half-time to have any impact on the game? Screw the Lampard goal/no goal. England were outplayed, outpaced, outrun, outmanouvered, and simply outclassed by a bunch of 22-23 year olds playing in their 10th or 11th match for their country.
