According to a senior Football Association official, the 62-year old Fulham manager is thought to be 'at the very top of a very short shortlist' for the position.

England under-21 coach Stuart Pearce is also being considered but Hodgson's success with Fulham, who last night reached next month's Europa League final in Hamburg, have marked him out as the frontrunner.

Hodgson's stock has risen sharply following his work, with limited funds, at Craven Cottage.

Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed has expressed confidence the manager will stay in the role, despite the admiring glances he is receiving from other clubs, with Liverpool among the latest to be linked with the former Inter Milan and Blackburn Rovers manager.
