Adam Buckingham, Adam McAssey, Alex Uttley, Jonathan Stranks won the men's four title at the World Acrobatic Gymnastic Championships while Douglas Fordyce and Edward Upcott scooped the men's pair gold.

Coach Neil Griffiths, the mastermind behind Spelbound's reality TV success, could barely contain his joy at the results in Wrozlaw.

Training for the World Championship was woven in between appearances at a Britain's Got Talent live tour but Griffiths insisted it was all good for preparation.

"I can't describe how I feel," he said.

"I need time to digest what has happened to me and my gymnasts here in Wrozlaw; especially, when first Douglas and Edward won and then the two Adams, Alex and Jonathan followed in their footsteps.

"It's been a tough month.  Wherever we were, we were looking to find a gym to train properly. We knew that the World Championships requires much more than performing in Spelbound - increased difficulty of the routines and immaculate execution.

"I can tell now that all our experience with the show has helped our athletes to achieve this remarkable success.

"They've learned how to keep cool and collected and they performed beyond my expectation. There is no happier person in the world than me."

Matei Todorov, who will now retire as British Gymnastics' technical director, insisted his only goal was now to help secure acrobatic gymnastics Olympic status.

"This is by far the best World Championships result achieved by our athletes since I was appointed 23 years ago, and is the best present I could have received before my retirement," he said.

acro world champs

Maybe now, after Spelbound's BGT sucess AND the remarkable medals at the world championships someone un the UK will light a bonfire under the British Gymnastics people and maybe SOMEONE will start taking acro seriously !
What other country but UK would virtually ignore a sport in which we excell - with no TV coverage, and with the junior competitors paying literally £1000,s out of their own pockets for the "privelage" of competing for their country ?
