British handball coach upbeat despite defeats
A YOUTHFUL and inexperienced British team pushed favourites Finland but still lost 35-24 at the under-21 World Championships in Holland.
It's certainly been a difficult weekend for Bill Baillie's side - they were given a baptism of fire by Hungary in their opening match but impressively fought hard in their 36-25 defeat by Holland on Saturday.
But there are certainly plenty of positives to take for the future, despite returning without a win.
Bundesliga player Chris Mohr weighed in with seven goals against Finland, to add to his six against Holland, to underline his potential.
Goalkeeper Josh Harrison also impressed while defender Robin Garnham was another to catch the eye.
In addition Great Britain were the youngest team at the event by around a year and a half, and will have nine of this year's team still eligible for next year.
"Iceland are a top nation, and will prove to be one of the favourites in the finals in later this year, so for us to run them so close was impressive," Baillie told the British Handball website.
"For 25 minutes we were only behind by two goals, and after tiring a little bit in the second half, adrenaline really kicked in and we fought back well.
We've grown visibly as the tournament has gone on. And we've made a big impression on the other coaches.
"They didn't know we were capable of playing at this level, but I think we've shown just how good we can be."
