PAU Quemada's double handed Olympic silver medallists Spain a much-needed victory over hosts India to get their Hockey World Cup campaign back on track in Delhi.

Quemada notched twice, while Roc Oliva, Albert Sala and captain Pablo Amat also found the net to hand Spain a 5-2 victory and condemn India to their second defeat of the competition.

Spain's chances of reaching the knock-out stages have now been given a major boost and they pull level with Champions Trophy winners Australia, who thumped South Africa 12-0 earlier in the day.

India meanwhile, face an uphill struggle if they are to reach the last four and must defeat Pool B leaders England in their next match if they are to advance.

The start to this match was understandably cagey after both sides had suffered defeats in their previous matches. It took until the 19th minute before the deadlock was broken as Sala rifled home from the top of the circle.

That was how it stayed until the stroke of half-time when Alex Fabregas sent Amat through and the Spain captain smartly deflected the ball home, ensuring he has now scored in each of the last four World Cups.

Sandeep Singh pulled a goal back for India four minutes after the stroke of half-time to give the hosts hope but two goals in two minutes from Quemada and Oliva effectively killed off India's resistance.

Gurwinder Singh Chandi did reduced the scores to 4-2 just a minute after Oliva had found the net but Quemada's second of the match with just three minutes remaining handed Spain the victory.

Meanwhile, Luke Doerner bagged four in Australia's demolition of South Africa, while Jamie Dyer notched a hat-trick and there were also goals for Glenn Turner (2), Desmond Abbott, Matthew Butturini and Fergus Kavanagh.
