GERMANY successfully defended their Olympic title in the men's hockey as they overcame the Netherlands with a star performance from Jan Philipp Rabente.|

Rabente struck two minutes before half time and five minute before the final whistle to secure a 2-1 victory and a second successive gold medal for Germany's men.

Prior to the final, Rabente had scored just six times in 77 international appearances but a fine solo effort and a back post deflection either side of Mink van der Weerden's penalty corner equaliser made him the hero of the hour.

A second successive gold medal for Germany was the perfect end to their London 2012 campaign and Benjamin Wess was certain the team would celebrate accordingly.

He said: "This is the perfect end to a great competition. I don't care about the goal we conceded, this was a battle between two really good teams and I am going to celebrate.

"We will have more than a few beers tonight. In Beijing we trashed Germany House - watch, we will do the same tonight."

Great Britain had earlier lost to Australia in the bronze medal match.
