Elite LeagueDAVID Longstaff struck four minutes from time to move Newcastle Vipers to the summit of the Elite League.

His strike settled a tense encounter against hosts Sheffield Steelers, meaning the Vipers took one giant leap from fifth to first.

Mike Berry steered Newcastle ahead in the first period while Doug Sheppard put Sheffield back on terms in the 36th minute.

Tyler Kindle's powerplay strike edged Vipers towards maximum points, only for Sheppard to net again to restore parity.

Overtime looked likely with Vipers goaltender Michel Robinson in impressive form but Vipers captain Longstaff made his late contribution to secure a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, Elite League officials have confirmed next year’s All-Star game will take on a new-look.

The Elite British All Stars, coached by Steelers coach Dave Matsos, will take on the Elite Overseas All Stars, who will be guided by Nottingham Panthers coach Corey Neilson.
