Thompson delight as Blaze silence Vipers to go top

Elite LeaguePAUL Thompson's Coventry Blaze moved back to the top of the Elite League with new signing Brad Cruikshank impressing.

Blaze were confident 5-1 winners over Newcastle Vipers, who were without their new signings, Ryan Jorde and Brent Hughes.

Nottingham Panthers slipped to second as third-placed Belfast Giants secured a 3-1 home win, courtesy of leading league scorer Colin Shields, Bruce Richardson and Pat Bateman.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh Capitals were 6-3 winners over Sheffield Steelers while basement side Hull Stingrays needed a penalty shoot to beat fourth-placed Cardiff Devils 2-1.
