Wood cannot hide delight after 2012 Olympic Torch selection
TINA Wood might be more at home in the swimming pool than on the running track - but the Orkney swimmer insists she'll be delighted to break the habit of a lifetime to carry the London 2012 Olympic Torch.
JUMPING FOR JOY: Tina Wood is one of only 8,000 people selected to carry the Olympic Torch next year
Wood was nominated for the starring Olympic role for her unceasing commitment to life on the island - representing Orkney at four Island Games as well as playing in the Kirkwall City Pipe Band and the Kirkjuvagr Ceilidh Band.
And the 24-year-old's work in the community, Wood is also treasurer on the Friends of Aurrida House committee, has been richly rewarded with the Kirkwall resident the first person from across Scotland to be given the chance to carry the Olympic Flame as it tours the country ahead of next year's Olympic Games in London.
With 15 years experience representing Orkney in a swimming capacity Wood could be forgiven for a few nerves about her high-pressure Olympic jog.
However the former Kirkwall Grammar School is adamant she'll be anything but apprehensive as she aims to enjoy her moment in the limelight courtesy of Lloyds TSB.
"It was a lovely surprise to find out that I was going to carry the Torch," said Wood.
"To be the first person in Scotland to be chosen is a real privilege and I think it will be a great experience.
"I think it will be a great day when the torch comes to the island and I am sure everyone will be down there to watch so it will be a good experience.
"I have swum for 15 years for Orkney and I really enjoy my swimming and I enjoy coaching now as well.
"I will be ok running though. I won't want it to go too fast through as I just want to make sure I enjoy the experience."
In and around her extra-curricular activities Wood also finds time for her 9-5 job, working at the Keelylang Day Centre - for adults with disabilities, and some swimming coaching at Orkney ASC.
And Sister Dawn Stout - the lady behind Wood's nomination - admitted there couldn't be a more worthy winner of the prize.
"I am absolutely delighted that she has been picked," said Dawn.
"I nominated her because I thought that she would be a deserving torchbearer and to be picked as the first one is really exciting.
"She just gives so much to our community. Everybody will be really excited that she has been picked and will be watching her."
