LONDON 2012: Former ITV boss named as Olympic Village mayor
FORMER television executive Sir Charles Allen has been named mayor of the Olympic Village ahead of the London 2012 Games.
Allen chaired the organising committee of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and is a non-executive director of Olympic organisers Locog and leads their nations and region's group.
The mayor acts as the figurehead of the Olympic Village and key responsibilities include welcoming and hosting international and domestic dignitaries, attending and speaking at village events and maintaining a visible and accessible presence throughout the Games.
"Having been involved in London 2012 since the start and as chair of Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002, Charles has a thorough understanding of the Games environment and its complex delivery. I am confident he will do a fantastic job," said London 2012 chairman Seb Coe.
