KOREA just missed out on a clean sweep of medals in the men's event at the Modern Pentathlon World Junior Championships.

Jihan Ahn claimed gold ahead of team-mate Jinhwa Jung but Russia's Serguei Karyakin just edged out Hwonho Jung to claim bronze.

Korea won the team event with ease ahead of Russia and Mexico while Great Britain's Steven Mason was 29th.

Mason, 18, was the only British competitor to make the final and bounced back from a disappointing ride, in which he dropped 80 points, to record a personal best in the decisive run/shoot.

"Some of the guys Steven was competing against will be seniors next year," said British national development coach Bernie Moss.

"Some of his fencing was sparkling at times and he ran his fastest time for the combined event.

"He just had a few problems with a couple of the targets and spent a little too long shooting them down than some of the other competitors."
