Weale beat Polivka at the recent Bath International but was no match when it really mattered.

The Czech Republic athlete went into the new-look run/shoot discipline in sixth place but his time of 10.37.00 took him to the top of the podium.

Weale - the only British athlete in the men's final - won 17 and lost 18 of his fencing contests, produced the seventh fastest swim and dropped 80 points in the riding arena.

Weale's time in the run/shoot was 11.50.00 - the 23rd best - taking his overall points scores to 5748.

"Sam had a solid day but not a great day," said coach Phillip Waeffler.

"Everything was quite solid, but at a World Cup that brings you into midfield, not the top-12."

British Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell finished 19th in Saturday's women's final.
