Moan completes perfect day for Norwegians in Oslo

HOME favourite Magnus Moan overhauled Austria's Mario Stecher in the final leg to anchor Norway to Nordic combined team World Cup gold in Oslo.

The 26-year old took over from third leg skier Jan Schmid with 24.9 seconds to catch on Olympic champions Austria.

But Moan, who has three individual World Cup wins to his name this season, made light work of the difference, tracking down Stecher and pulling more than 7 seconds away from the Austrian during the 5km leg.

The Norwegian, supported by teammates Petter Tande, Mikko Kokslien and Schmid, eventually completed the win in 49:13.3 minutes with Austria 7.3 seconds back in silver and Germany 1:11.2 mins behind in bronze.

World and Olympic silver medallists Germany won the ski jump stage of the competition and looked to challenge for top spot with a 28 seconds advantage going into the cross country stage.

Austria's Bernhard Gruber quickly tracked down Germany's opening skier Johannes Rydzek and handed over to teammate David Kreiner in first.

But while the Germans had lost ground, Norway, inspired by the home crowd, held on to the Austrians' charge and remained close enough for Moan to steal the victory in his anchor leg.

The Norwegians' victory capped a successful day for the home country in Oslo, with the women's cross country skiers completing a 1-2-3 in the 30km freestyle mass start and cross country skier Petter Northug romping to victory in the 50km freestyle mass start.

Meanwhile, the final individual event of the Nordic combined World Cup season will take place in the Norwegian capital on Sunday.

France's Jason Lamy Chappuis has already tied up the crystal globe but Moan will be desperate to impress again with the Nordic World Championships set to take place on the same track in 12 months time.
