The visually-impaired cross-country skier had claimed the 10km distance didn't suit him, while his brother and guide Robin admitted he struggled with the classical skiing style.
But the pair put those issues behind them to comfortably claim gold ahead of Norway's Flo Helge and Russia's Nikolay Polukhin.
"Classic may be my race but ten kilometres is definitely not," said McKeever.
"I just don't have that speed in my body. Robin was pulling me, so it was hard to be in sync. I was just trying to hold pace and keep up but it worked."
Japan's Yoshihiro Nitta won the men's 10km standing event while Oleksandra Kononova, of the Ukraine, won the 5km standing women's gold and Germany's Verena Bentele claimed the visually impaired event.
