MODERN pentathlon is as Olympic as sports come - designed by the five-ringed founder Pierre de Coubertin to simulate the experience of a 19th century cavalry soldier.

But no-one told Boris Onishchenko of the Soviet Union. Boris has an Olympic gold medal from Munich 1972 and two silver medals to his name, but 1976 was his real coup de gras.

‘Disonischenko' as he became known effectively devised a piece of technology that made it appear his sword was hitting his opponent and thus setting the electric buzzer off.

He was caught out in Montreal and vilified by competitors and compatriots alike. The Soviet Union volleyball team even threatened to throw ‘Boris the cheat' out of their hotel window if they saw him.
