FOUR-time Paralympic medallist Heather Frederiksen is convinced a three-week altitude training camp can see her reach new heights at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.

The 23-year-old is 100m backstroke Paralympic gold champion and world record holder and will renew her rivalry with the USA's Jessica Long on Monday.

Long captured gold in the 100m and 400m freestyle in Beijing - both times pushing Frederiksen into second place.

But Frederiken, who set a new 400m freestyle world record at the British Championships in Sheffield in March, insists she is in perfect shape to top the podium in Manchester.

"I've been away for three weeks in Spain in Sierra Nevada doing some altitude training and hopefully that can give me the edge in Manchester," she said.

"I am not sure exactly how I will react to it and when it will be at its peak for me but hopefully it will work well and I can be in good shape at Manchester.

"It was great to be out there and do the altitude training and although you can never know exactly how it will work out for you hopefully it will work well and help me out.

"I'll be going into the 100m back as the world record holder so I'm going to be confident that I can win that.

"But I'd like to hold onto my world record in the 400 metres there as well because I only broke that at Sheffield at the British Championships a few weeks ago so it would be nice to keep that."

Frederiksen is no stranger to the Manchester Aquatics Centre which acts as the training base for her club City of Salford and she believes home advantage could prove pivotal.

"I always like competing at Manchester because it is a pool I know well and it is always good to go back there," she added.

"When you are competing away from home and in a venue you don't know too well that gives you something else to think about so to be at Manchester removes that.

"I train down there with the City of Salford Swimming Club sometimes so I know what to expect and hopefully I can do well."
