My first and last....with Paul Goodison
BRITISH sailor Paul Goodison finally buried his Olympic nightmare in Beijing by capturing Laser class gold, four years after settling for an agonising fourth in Athens.
SPLASHING AROUND: Paul Goodison has been in superb form since collecting Olympic gold last year (OnEdition)
He has since been in impeccable form, adding yet another European title and capturing an elusive World Championship gold in 2009.
Here he is talking football injuries, Inglourious Basterds and kite-boarding with Sportsbeat's Holly Hamilton.
My first event: My first memory is of a local open meeting in Yorkshire when I was really young. I won there actually so a good start!
My first international event: It was the European Youth Championships in Sweden about 15 years ago. I was fifth in the end, so I was pretty happy with that.
My first podium finish: That was third in Kieler Woche in Germany in the mid 90s. I've competed a lot there over the years but that was my first time on the podium.
My first Olympic memory: That was watching Daley Thompson competing on TV. He was always my childhood hero especially when the Olympic Games came around.
My first award: Yorkshire Young Sailor of the Year in 1994.
My first injury: I have pretty much been injury free so very lucky in that respect although I used to play football as a youngster and wanted to be a professional footballer.
But I had a knee injury playing football at under-12 level which made it very difficult to ever get back into the team and led to me trying sailing instead.
So it wasn't such a bad injury to have considering the way my sporting career has worked out.
My first job: I've been lucky because I've always been a professional sailor but I did have to do some work as a labourer, which I hated!
That was when I was a student at Southampton University and needed to make some money in the holidays.
I graduated from there with a degree in Maritime Studies and was granted an honorary Doctorate in Sport there this week. It was great to go back ten years after I had first graduated.
My last album: Lungs by Florence and The Machine, I really enjoy listening to that.
My last film: Inglourious Basterds with Brad Pitt. It was a bit too Tarantino for me so I didn't get that into it.
My last takeaway: That was a curry I really enjoyed the other night.
My last laugh: Today, because I've just been out kite-boarding with my friends in Weymouth and some of the lads were getting properly thrown around in the water. That was a really good laugh.
