The Chinese star, who won three golds last month at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, took the title in a time of 43.619 seconds.

The defending champion finished ahead of Canadian pair Kalyna Roberge and Marianne St-Gelais, who took silver and bronze respectively in Bulgaria.

After becoming only the second woman ever to defend her 500m Olympic title, Wang now has 15 World Championship gold medals to her name.

Wenhao Liang made it a successful day for the Chinese claiming gold in the men's event as he skated over the line in 41.383 seconds.

And Canada picked up their third and fourth medals of the day as Francois Hamelin finished in the silver medal position and Francois-Louis Tremblay captured bronze.
