The world champion was just edged out of top spot in Vancouver by South Korean youngster Lee Sang-Hwa in the 500m, but found consolation in winning her first Olympic medal in three attempts.
The German claimed victory in 38.08 seconds in front of her home crowd in Erfurt, ahead of the Netherland's Margot Boer and American Heather Richardson who finished second and third respectively.
Boer enjoyed a successful day as she went on to take silver in the 1000m behind Germany's Monique Angermuller who topped the podium with Natasja Bruintjes coming third.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Shani Davis took gold in the men's 1000m for America, clocking a time of 1:09.29 ahead of Mark Tuitert in second for the Netherlands and compatriot Stefan Groothuis who came third.
Jan Smeekens took the men's 500m title for the Netherlands in a time of 34.97 seconds, while Japan's Yuya Oikawa took silver and Ronald Mulder rounded off a good day's performance for the Dutch taking bronze.
