The 20-year-old, who was part of the American trio who claimed team pursuit silver in Vancouver last month, romped home in 1:45.36 minutes to take victory by 0.79 seconds ahead of Canadian rival Lucas Makowsky.

Makowsky was a member of the Canadian squad who secured team gold ahead of the USA in Vancouver but in the Netherlands, Kuck turned the tables to take the overall lead with the 10,000m still remaining.

Defending champion Sven Kramer of the Netherlands finished fourth behind Makowsky and American Trevor Marsicano.

Kramer could still claim his fourth straight title with victory in Sunday's 10,000m.

In the women's 3000m, the Czech Republic's Martina Sablikova continued her superb season, taking victory ahead of Ireen Wust of the Netherlands, the woman she dethroned as Olympic champion in Vancouver.

Sablikova came home in 4:03.59 minutes, a full 1.51 ahead of her Dutch rival, while third was Olympic silver medallist Stephanie Beckert of Germany, a further 0.52 off the pace.

And in the women's 500m Yekaterina Shikhova led home a Russian 1-2, crossing the line in 38.83, 0.32 ahead of compatriot Yekaterina Lobysheva while the Czech Republic's Karolina  Erbanova took third.

Wust still leads the overall standings however with the 1500m and the 5000m to come on Sunday.
