MCCANN Worldgroups appointment as London 2012's marketing service agency came as no surprise to some insiders.

After all, their chairman has impeccable connections.

Brett Gosper, the chairman McCann Worldgroup UK, is the son of Kevan Gosper, the International Olympic Commitee's often controversial vice president.

US-based McCann have paid at least £10 million to secure a place as a tier three partner for the London 2012 Games and while there is no suggestion the tendering process was anything but fair, there are few better connected IOC politicians than Gosper, a former Olympic silver medallist and a vice president of the Sydney 2000 organising commitee.

It's the first time marketing services has been an Olympic sponsorship category.

WPP Group, which is based in London, were also in the running for the contract which will cover advertising on press, radio, outdoor, online and mobile plus direct and digital marketing. However, it is thought they were uncomfortable with the return on the investment required to secure the deal.

"This is an extremely significant appointment as the agency will have a huge role in how the Games are not only perceived in 2012, but also how they'll be remembered in years to come," said Lord Coe, the chairman of London 2012 organisers Locog.

"We're reaching the stage in our life-cycle where it's all about delivering - McCann Worldgroup will help us with this and we welcome them to the team."

It's the second big Olympic win in seven days for McCann - who last week were employed to develop a marketing campaign for next year's inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

"The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games form the biggest event that will happen in London and the UK for a generation," said Gosper.

"We want to help the biggest event become the most memorable, and are thrilled and honoured that the full force of McCann Worldgroup in the UK has been chosen as part of the Locog team."
